Depression
Depression is a mood disorder that affects children and adults. It causes a persistent low mood, loss of interest, and feelings of hopelessness. It affects how you think, feel, and approach daily activities. It also can have physical effects on your health by disrupting healthy eating and sleeping habits, and for some, exacerbating chronic health conditions. It is a normal part of life to feel sad and down sometimes, but if you are experiencing a depressed mood for over two weeks that gets in the way of your daily life, you may need professional support to feel better.
Depression is one of the most common mental health struggles for children and adults. It affects how a person feels, behaves, views themselves and others, and influences their behaviors. It presents differently for each person, but can include feelings of hopelessness, isolation and aloneness, finding less enjoyment in previously pleasurable activities, burdened with feeling worthless, guilty, having difficulty focusing, sleeping and can include thoughts of death or suicide.

Treatment for depression might include medication and/or psychotherapy. I provide non-pharmaceutical, evidence based psychotherapy treatments integrating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness therapies. For young children struggling with depression, additional approaches found to be effective treatments focus on the parent-child relationship, such as Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT).
